***5 has good strength and impact properties, plus good machinability and reasonable weldability in the hot rolled or normalised condition. it has a low through hardening capability with sections up to around *0mm only generally recommended as suitable for through hardening and tempering. However ***5 steel can be successfully flame or induction hardened in the as rolled or normalised condition resulting in surface hardnesses of up to Rc *4 - Rc *0 depending upon the quenching medium employed, the type of set up and section size etc. Core strengths will not change.

Heat treament of SAE AISI ***5 steel
Forging
at **0°C - ***0°C, Hold until the temperature is uniform, Then Cool in furnace
Annealing
Heat to **0°C - **0°C , Slowly, Then Hold the temperature until uniform; Cool in heat treatment furnace.
Normalizing
Heat to **0°C - **0°C, Soak evenly, about Soak for *0 - *5 minutes, then Cool in air
Stress Relieving
Heat to **0°C - **0°C, Hold the temperature, Soak enough time, until thoroughly heat, then Cool in still air
Hardening
Heat to **0°C - **0°C, Soak for *0 - *5 minutes per *5mm of section, Quench in water or brine
Tempering
Re-heat to **0°C - **0°C as needs, Soak aboput 1 hours per *5mm of section, Cool in air.
Processing
