Uganda's Arabica coffee grows around the slopes of Mount
Elgon. The coffee was introduced to Uganda from Ethiopia and
evolved along the slopes of Mount Elgon. The coffee now grows on
three mountains in Uganda (Mt. Rwenzori, Mt. Muhabura and Mt.
Elgon) Uganda has favorable conditions for growing high quality
produce compared to most of the world in terms of soil, weather and
climate. Arabica cultivar Bugishu / Bugisu, (a rare breed of
Arabica) is grown near Sipi Falls on the western slopes of Mt.
Elgon, one of Ugandas largest mountains. Ugandan Arabica coffee is
known as a premium brew on the world market for its mild to medium
berry, chocolaty taste.
Uganda is the Worlds 8th largest coffee exporter and the largest
African coffee exporter. Uganda accounts for 7% of the worlds
coffee exports. The country exported 288,000 metric tons of coffee
to the world market in 2018.
