The Cervlo S5 Ultegra bike is just like many a great-handling road bike. Just faster. Part of the reason people like road bikes is that they feel fast. Cervlo adds proven aerodynamics and builds on the Ultegra ***0 eleven-speed group for function, light weight, and reliability.
 
Ultegra is an easy choice for people buying their own gear. It looks and works like Dura-Ace, is only marginally heavier, and is much friendlier to the wallet. You get the same ergonomics, the same shifting and braking geometries: it's so close you can barely tell the difference. The Ultegra ****5 cassette gives both a wide range and closely-spaced jumps between gears.
 
That cassette is mated to a Rotor 3F *2/*6 semi-compact crankset. It uses a compact spider, but the spider is so beefy that the rings are still really stiff. The *2 big gives you plenty of big gears for racing off of mountains and the *6 small gives you light gears for climbing the steepest grades. But the biggest advantage of Rotor is their partnership with Cervlo and how the two birthed the BBright bottom bracket standard that is both wide and tall both for greater crank stiffness and greater bottom bracket stiffness. The *0mm spindle doesn't deform and the widely-spaced material around it makes the bottom bracket area both lighter and stiffer.

The bike is finished with pieces from Cervlo's longtime partners Mavic, 3T, and Fizik. The wheels are light and aero while still being durable. The bars are what Cervlo's pro team is offered, as is the saddle. Don't be surprised if you find this bike the home or back-up ride for top-level pros, as it has the performance with out the top-shelf price tag.
