Pharmacological properties
Preparations from Icelandic moss have an immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory effect, have antimicrobial, antioxidant, absorbing, oncoprotective effect on the human body. The mucous substance eliminates irritation, envelops the inflamed mucous membranes of the stomach, mouth, larynx, intestines.

Usnic acid sodium salt, which has antibacterial properties, is successfully used in the composition of cetraria preparations. Lichesteric, as well as protolichesteric acids are especially active against streptococci, staphylococci and other resistant microbes. Usninat sodium is used externally in the treatment of trophic ulcers, infected wounds, burns.

Due to its unique composition, Icelandic moss is considered a natural antibiotic, the strength of which often prevails over conventional antibiotics. Lichen acids, in particular usnic acid, effectively affect pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi.
