Chrome ore is a naturally occurring mineral primarily composed of
Chromite
(FeCrâ‚‚Oâ‚„), which is the only commercially viable source of
chromium. It is
widely used in the production of ferrochrome, an essential alloy in stainless steel
manufacturing. The ore contains varying amounts of
chromium oxide
(Cr₂O₃), along with iron oxide (FeO/Fe₂O₃), silica (SiO₂), alumina (Al₂O₃),
magnesia (MgO), and lime (CaO), depending on its
geological source.
Chrome ore is categorized into metallurgical, refractory, and chemical grades based
on its chromium content and Cr:Fe ratio. The metallurgical grade (containing more than
*0% Cr₂O₃) is the most valuable, as it is used in the production of
stainless steel and other alloys. The refractory grade is used in
high-temperature applications, such as furnace linings, while the
chemical grade is
used in the production of chromium-based chemicals.
