Coenzyme Q*0, also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, coenzyme Q, and abbreviated at times to CoQ*0 ,CoQ, or Q*0 is a coenzyme that is ubiquitous in animals and most bacteria (hence the name ubiquinone). It is a 1,*-benzoquinone, where Q refers to the quinone chemical group and *0 refers to the number of isoprenyl chemical subunits in its tail.
This fat-soluble substance, which resembles a vitamin, is present in all respiring eukaryotic cells, primarily in themitochondria. It is a component of the electron transport chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, which generates energy in the form of ATP.
