Scientific Name(s): Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Common Name(s): Cordyceps, yartsa gunbu.
Grown at an altitude of 3,**0 5,**0 m above sea level during the months of May July in Bhutan, Cordyceps are a highly valued medicinal plant (a caterpillar fungus).

Known for its medicinal values, Cordyceps are good for reinforcing the lung and kidneys, arresting bleeding and dispelling phlegm, treats circulatory and respiratory complications, it also builds the human immune system and helps in shortness of breathe, asthma, impotency, emission, soreness of loins and knees, dizziness and sexual disfunction amongst many of its prowess. It is highly valued as a general health tonic for its ability to improve energy, stamina, endurance and sleeping problems.

Subsequently, the agriculture ministry in Bhutan calls for an auction after the collection season in all the cordycep growing area ends. The minimum price for various grades of cordyceps is fixed at the auction attended by highlanders, government officials, local leaders, and exporters(suppliers).

At the auction, highlanders fetch different prices for the cordyceps based on the grade after physical scrutiny of the fungus.
