A double acting hydraulic cylinder (hydraulic seal) has two piston surfaces and hydraulic fluid can be applied in both directions. It allows the cylinder to move in and out actively. The surface affected during retraction is smaller because the piston rod is connected to that surface. As a result, the cylinder has a higher velocity during retraction and a lower force (traction) than during extension.

Travel in one direction is always different from travel in the other, all things being equal; pushing motions require more force and are slower, but produce more work output. The pulling action is faster, but produces less work output.
