The drive shaft is anassembly of one or two Universal joints
connected to a shaft or tube used to transmit power from the
transmission to the differential. It is also called the propeller
shaft.
On front engined rear-wheel-drive cars, the rotary motion of the
transmissions output shaft is carried through the drive shaft to
the differential, which causes the rear drive wheels to turn.
The drive shaftis normally made from seamless steel or aluminum
tubing with Universaljoint yokes welded to both ends of the shaft.
To save weight, some manufacturers useepoxy-and-carbon fiber
shafts. Some drive lines have two drive shafts and three Universal
jointsand use a center support bearing that serves as the
connecting link between the two halves
