The Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is a way of reducing pollutants in the exhaust gas. Due to high combustion temperatures and an air surplus, direct-injection generates more nitric oxygen (NO) than other diesel methods do.The EGR system reduces the generation of NO considerably by adding exhaust gas to the fresh air delivered to the engine.The exhaust gas recirculation rate, however, is limited due to a rise of HC and CO levels and soot particle emission. An exhaust gas recirculation system works ideally only if it is controlled precisely. Faults on EGR systems are mostly valves that do not open or close. Whereas a valve that does not close gives rise to faults that are noticed by the driver, valves that do not open usually go unnoticed.

Before changing the Egr valve it is a good idea to check out what caused the problem in the first place.

EGR FAULTS CAN BE CAUSED BY

Faults in the crankcase breather/oil separator/engine vent valve
Increased blow by as a result of wear on the piston and cylinders
Turbocharger faults ie: worn bearings or blocked oil return line
Not changing oil or oil filters
Oil levels to high
Worn valve shafts or guides and as a result increased transfer of oil into the induction air channel
Out dated ECU software (in many cases updating this can solve the problems of excessive coke deposits)

IF THE EGR VALVE DOES NOT OPEN

Nitrogen oxides increase considerably
Incorrect engine performance characteristics
Possibly increased fuel consumption
Poor/No idle
Poor operation after cold start
Increased fuel consumption
Incorrect engine performance
Fault lamp lights/fault code set top speed is not reached

THE POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THE EGR VALVE NOT TO OPEN

EGR valve sticks/gummed up
Leakage/Secondary air on the vacuum side
Vacuum connections disconnected, leaky or incorrect
Faulty electric switch pressure converter valve
Non-opening blow-off valve (for turbocharger)

IF THE EGR VALVE DOES NOT CLOSE

Poor/No idling
Black smoke
Poor acceleration
Top speed is not reached

THE POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THE EGR VALVE NOT TO CLOSE

Heavy deposits on tappet or valve mushroom
EGR valve damaged through
over heating
- due to incorrect control
- due to high exhaust back pressure
- due to non-opening blow-off valve (for turbocharger)
Air flow meter or other sensor signal faulty
Intake pipe in the area of the exhaust gas recirculation system
partly constricted by deposits/Turbocharger could have an oil leak oil leak
