Description:
Ilmenite is a
weakly magnetic titanium-iron oxide
mineral which is iron-black or steel-gray. It is found all
over the world.
It is a crystalline iron titanium oxide (FeTiO). It crystallizes in the trigonal system. The Ilmenite crystal structure is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure.
Applications:
Most ilmenite is mined for titanium dioxide production. Finely ground titanium dioxide is a bright white powder widely used as a base pigment in paint, paper and plastics.
Besides these uses, ilmenite sand is also used for abrasive blasting due to its high specific gravity, harness and high density.
Ilmenite sand is also used as a sandblasting agent in the cleaning of diecasting dies.
