MBS impact modifier

MBS (Methyl methacrylate Butadiene styrene) resin is a ternary copolymer of methyl methacrylate (M), butadiene (B), and styrene (S), with a typical core-shell structure.
Due to its solubility parameters being similar to PVC, the thermodynamic compatibility between the two is good, manifested by PVC having high impact strength at room temperature or low temperature. And due to its similar refractive index to PVC, when the two are blended and melted, it is easy to achieve a uniform refractive index. Therefore, using MBS as an impact modifier for PVC will not affect its transparency. So MBS is the best material for producing transparent products from PVC. On the other hand, due to its good compatibility with PVC and high impact resistance at room or low temperatures, it is also suitable for various non transparent products. According to the information, when MBS resin is added to PVC, the impact strength of the product can be improved, and the cold resistance and processing flowability of the product can also be improved. Therefore, MBS has been widely used as an impact modifier for PVC. In addition, it also has good coloring properties and can be used to make containers, pipes, boards, interior decorative panels, and soft products. However, due to its unsaturated structure of butadiene and susceptibility to aging caused by oxygen and ultraviolet radiation, it has poor weather resistance and is not suitable for making products for long-term outdoor use.
