Molasses is a natural and nutritious sweetener from sugar cane during the production of refined sugar.  Sugarcane molasses has several important role in livestock feeding, due to the nutritive, appetizing and physical properties of its sugar contents.
Because of its high viscosity, it is rarely fed directly in its liquid form but instead mixed with other ingredients. 

Molasses is a valuable additive for silage making when the forage is in a poor quality grass, warm season grass or a legume. 
It is an excellent source of energy for livestock, particularly in situations where grains are unavailable or too expensive.   Molasses is fed as supplement to poor quality roughage, for example during period of food scarcity.
