Refuge Room (chamber)

Overview

The Refuge Room is a pre-constructed underground safe room, designed to provide post-emergency protection, breathable air and other provisions to miners trapped undergroundwhenevacuation is no-longer safe or practical. It features:

Built to accommodate larger numbers of people
Relatively inexpensive to build and equip
Can be connected to the mine air supply
Cooling system with chemical and phase change refrigeration
Dual power supply with battery backup can be provided
Does not interfere with ongoing mining operations
Ready for immediate use can serve multiple purposes

Construction

All constructions conform to the national coal mines safety regulations. Refuge Rooms are excavated out of the side wall of the entry, the wall around door is required to be channeled with a depth not less than 0.2 m, and it should be cement poured with cement intensity of no less than C*0 and compact jointed with the coal mass to ensure enough air tightness. An explosion resistant door provides access into the room. A transitional gas spaying system and air purge curtain are available.

Living Room

Breathable air in the living room can be accomplished in three ways.

Compressed mine air connected to an air purification unit to purify the air
Compressed oxygen and air cylinders
Through a borehole from the surface

A scalable supply of food and water are provided, along with a first aid kit, a communication device, flashlights and gas monitors. Seats are in place for additional comfort and a portable toilet, along with supplies as needed.
