A thermistor is "a thermally sensitive resistor" that is a semiconductor whose resistance varies significantly with temperature. In general, there are two types thermal senstive resistor. One is PTC ( Postive Temperature Coefficient); the resistance increases as temperature increases. The other is NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient); the resistance decreases as temperature increases. The following description is applicable only to NTC thermistors.
NTC thermistor is an sensitive elements widely used in
information system and control system, which is mainly used
for temperature measurements, control, protection and
heating. Thermistors are thermally sensitive elements of
sintered fine ceramic semiconductor composed of several
transition metal oxides, primarily Mn, Co and Ni. Their
operating temperature range is from **0°C to ****0°C that
covers the whole range necessary for ordinary temperature
control. They are also small, stable and have great
sensitivity. Thanks to these features, they are used in
large quantities as temperature sensors and temperature
compensation elements in consumer electronic appliances and
industrial equipment.
