Tamarind
Tamarind is a type of tropical fruit used in many dishes around the
world. Tamarind is a hardwood tree, known scientifically as
Tamarindus indica. Its native to Africa but also grows in India,
Pakistan, and many other tropical regions. The tree produces
bean-like pods filled with seeds surrounded by a fibrous pulp.
It may even have medicinal properties.
Color: Dull brownish orange or yellow color.
Taste: Sweet and sour to a tangy tart flavor .
Aroma: Unique Cinnamon - like smell.
Varieties:
1. Whole
2. Paste
Storing Conditions: The product must be stored in an airtight
container and far away from sunlight and any moisture.
Shelf life: 3 - 4 months after the date of production under storage
conditions in accordance with the recommended
storage.
Benefits of Tamarind:
Antioxidant Content: The pulp of tamarind is rich in numerous
phytonutrients that act as potent dietary antioxidants, and can
enhance the efficacy of the bodys natural immune defences.
Antioxidants are needed to reduce the inflammatory impact
of oxidative stress.
Maintain Heart Health: Being rich in polyphenols and flavonoids,
tamarind has been shown to decrease LDL cholesterol and increase
HDL cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of atherosclerosis. The
dried pulp was also found to have anti-hypertensive effects,
reducing diastolic blood pressure.
Liver Protective Benefits: Fatty liver disease, or hepatosteatosis,
is increasing in the Western world, and tamarind fruit extract has
been shown to provide a protective effect for the liver, as it
contains antioxidants called procyanidins, that counter free
radical damage to the liver.
Antimicrobial Benefits: Natural compounds present in tamarind
extract have the potential of being used as a natural
antimicrobial against pathogenic microorganisms. Specifically,
a compound called lupeol has been identified for
its antibacterial properties.
Improves Digestion: Tamarind has been used since ancient times as a
laxative because of its tartaric acid, malic acid, and
potassium content. Its ability to relax abdominal muscles is
why it is also used as a remedy for diarrhea. So, while the fruit
is used to relieve constipation, the leaves provide treatment from
diarrhea, and the root and bark can be consumed to alleviate
abdominal pain.
Deals with Allergies: It is an effective way to deal with allergic
asthma and cough because of its antihistaminic properties. Its
also a rich source of vitamin C and can boost the immune system to
prevent cold and cough.
Promotes Weight Loss: Tamarind is rich in fibre and has no fat
content. Studies suggest that eating tamarind daily might
actually help in weight reduction since it contains flavonoids and
polyphenols. Also, tamarind is loaded with hydroxycitric acid,
which reduces appetite by inhibiting amylase, an enzyme responsible
for converting carbohydrate into fat.
