Introduction to Stainless Steel Plates

Stainless steel plates are flat-rolled products renowned for their exceptional corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and versatile aesthetic appeal. Primarily composed of iron, a minimum of 10.5% chromium, and often alloyed with elements like nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen, they derive their "stainless" property from a passive, self-repairing chromium oxide layer that forms on the surface upon exposure to oxygen. This inherent feature makes them indispensable across a vast spectrum of industries where durability and hygiene are paramount.

Available in a wide range of grades, thicknesses, and surface finishes, stainless steel plates are categorized by their metallurgical microstructure. The most common types are Austenitic (e.g., 304, 316), known for excellent formability and corrosion resistance; Ferritic (e.g., 430), valued for good resistance to stress corrosion and a magnetic property; and Martensitic (e.g., 410), which can be hardened by heat treatment for high strength. Duplex grades offer a hybrid structure, providing superior strength and chloride resistance.

The manufacturing process involves melting, casting, hot rolling, annealing to relieve stresses, descaling, and often cold rolling for precise dimensions and superior surface quality. Common finishes range from standard mill finishes (No. 1, 2B) to brushed, polished (mirror), or patterned surfaces.
