Quicklime, also known as calcium oxide (CaO) or lime, is a white, caustic, alkaline, and  
 crystalline compound that is produced by heating limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) to high temperatures in a process known as calcination. During this process, limestone undergoes thermal decomposition, releasing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and leaving behind calcium oxide. This reaction can be described by the following chemical equation:

Formation of Quicklime (Calcium Oxide)

Quicklime is produced by heating limestone (a sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcium carbonate) in a kiln at temperatures around ******0°C (*******2°F).
