Mechanical Properties of Ductile Iron Products Ductile iron with spheroidal, or nodular graphite , differs from grey iron with flake form of graphite in much higher strength, which is close to that of carbon steel grade ST*5 on such parameters, as ultimate strength, yield strength and elongation; and better corrosion resistance. These properties are obtained by adding magnesium to molten iron. This treatment results in formation of small spheres (balls) of graphite in iron, thus eliminating any risk of crack formation or spreading, simultaneously adding ductility and strength to iron. Improved mechanical properties are provided by chemical composition of ductile iron and by high-temperature annealing, what ensures their use under alternating loads, in areas of shifting, expansive and unstable soils. Ductile iron pipes and pipelines can be subjected to great diameter deflections during operation, preserving all their functional features, what allows them to sustain heavy backfill or truck loads. Pipes are manufactured from ductile iron with spheroidal graphite by centrifugal casting. They are furnished in five standard sizes - **0, **0, **0, **0, **0 mm and standard length ***0 mm. Ductile iron pipes are certified to international standards ISO ***1 and EN **5.
