Description

Classification
Garlic is classified in two classes defined below:

Class I

Garlic in this class must be of superior quality and characteristic of the variety and/or commercial type.

  • Intact
  • Of regular shape
  • Properly cleaned
  • Free from defects with the exception of very slight superficial blemishes
  • No affect the general appearance of the produce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentation in the package
The cloves must be compact.

The roots must be cut close to the base of the bulb in the case of dry garlic.

Class 

Garlic in this class must be of good quality. They must be characteristic of the variety and/or commercial type.

The bulb must be;
  • intact 
  • of fairly regular shape
The following slight defects, however may be allowed provided these do not affect the general appearance of the produce, the quality, the keeping quality and presentation in the package;
  • Slight tears in the outer skin of the bulb
The cloves must be reasonably compact. 

Provisions concerning sizing

The minimum diameter is fixed at *0 mm for garlic in the I Classs and at *5 mm for garlic in class "Ⅱ"

Provisions concerning tolerance

Tolerances in respect of quality and size shall be allowed in each package, or in each lot for produce presented in bulk, for produce not satisfiying the requirements of the class indicated. 

Quality tolerances
 
Class I
5 per cent by weight of bulbs not satisfying the requirements of the class, but meeting those of Class I or, exceptionally, coming within the tolerances of that class.
 
ClassⅡ
*0 per cent by weight of bulbs not satisfying the requirements of the class, but meeting those of Class I or, exceptionally, coming within the tolerances of that class.
 
Within this tolerance not more than 1 per cent by weight of bulbs may have cloves with externally visible sprouts.

Size Tolerance

For all classes: 7 per cent by weight of bulbs not satisfying the requirements as regards sizing and the size indicated.
Within this tolerance, not more than 3 per cent of bulbs may have a diameter smaller than the specified minimum but not less greater than *5 mm.

Provisions concerning presentation

Uniformity 

The contents of each package, or lot for produce presented in bulk, must be uniform and contain only garlic of the same origin, variety or commercial type, quality and size (if sized).
 
The visible part of the contents of the package, or lot for produce presented in bulk, must be representative of the entire contents.

Packaging

As the most garlic is packed in the mesh bag, The material used for packaging must be new, clean and of a quality such as to avoid causing any external or internal damage to the produce. The use of materials, particularly paper or stamps, bearing trade specifications is allowed provided the printing or labeling has been done with no-toxic ink or glue.

Pesticide residues
 
Garlic shall compy with those maximum pesticide residues limits established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission for this commodity. The table below provides current MRLs
