Indication: Ezetimibe is used to lower cholesterol level. As a new-type selective cholesterol absorption inhibitor, by binding with Intestinal brush border membrane vesicles’ membrane proteins (its relative molecular mass is **5X**3), it inhibits intestinal transport of dietary and biliary cholesterol absorption in the intestine and reduces serum and liver cholesterol levels. Different from acid chelating agent, Ezetimibe does not affect the absorption of cholesterol esters, other steroids (such as bezoar acid), triglycerides, or fat-soluble vitamins. Its pharmacological effects has nothing to do with the inhibition of Acetyl coenzyme A-cholesterol acetyl transferase (ACAT) and the expression of LDL receptor (scavenger receptor). After being absorbed and combining with glucuronic acid in the liver, via the enterohepatic circulation Ezetimibe almost specifically settles down at the small intestinal mucosa cells.
