TESTS
Appearance of solution
Shake 2.0 ml with *0 ml of water. It dissolves completely. The solution is clear and colourless.
Acidity
To *0 ml add *0 ml of ethanol (*6 per cent) and 1 ml of phenolphthalein solution.  Not more than 1 ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator to pink.
Refractive index
1.**8 to 1.**1.

Acidity— Neutralize *0 mL of alcohol containing 1 mL of phenolphthalein TS with 0.*0 N sodium hydroxide. Dissolve *0 mL of Benzyl Alcohol in *0 mL of the neutralized alcohol, and titrate with 0.*0 N sodium hydroxide to the first appearance of a pink color that persists for not less than *0 seconds: not more than 1.0 mL is consumed.
Limit of nonvolatile residue— [NOTE—Ensure that the Benzyl Alcohol to be examined complies with the test for Peroxide value before performing this test.] Evaporate *0.0 g of Benzyl Alcohol on a water bath to dryness, and dry the residue at **5 for 1 hour. Cool in a desiccator, and weigh. The residue weighs not more than 5 mg: not more than 0.*5% of nonvolatile residue is found.
