Glycerin, also known as Glycerol, embodies an organic compound that
is a colorless, odorless, transparent, viscous liquid with a sweet
taste. Notably, hygroscopic, it can absorb moisture from the
surrounding air. Moreover, it can absorb Hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen
cyanide, and sulfur dioxide. One remarkable trait of glycerin is
its miscibility with water, alcohols, amines, and phenols, which
can occur in any proportion. However, it remains insoluble in
benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, trichloromethane, carbon
tetrachloride, petroleum ether, and oil.
Furthermore, glycerin is prone to dehydration, leading to the
formation of diglycerol and polyglycerol. Under oxidation, it gives
rise to glyceraldehyde and glyceric acid. Nevertheless, it exhibits
incompatibility with anhydrous acetic anhydride, potassium
permanganate, strong acids, etchants, fatty amines, isocyanates,
and oxidants.
