Coix Seed(Job's tears) is a tall grain-bearing of the family
(grass family) native to and peninsular but elsewhere cultivated
in gardens as an annual. Two varieties of the species are grown.
Coix lacryma-jobi var. lacryma-jobi has hard shelled pseudocarps
which are very hard, pearly white, oval structures used as beads
for making, necklaces, and other objects. Coix lacryma-jobi var.
ma-yuen is harvested as a crop and is used medicinally in parts
of Asia.
Function
Coix seed is the common name for the Chinese medicinal material
Coix lacryma-jobi seed. The seeds of Coix lacryma-jobi are used
as a source of food, sometimes called adlay seed or Job’s tear.
To invigorate the spleen function and promote diuresis, to
alleviate arthritis, to arrest diarrhea, to remove heat and
facillitate the drainage of pus.
