In developed countries like Germany, USA and Japan, processed coir products have gained acceptance in the field of bio-engineering. It is used as geotextiles and fascines. Geo-textiles or erosion control nets are coir twine woven into mats. They protect steep mountain slopes, road slopes and riverbanks against soil erosion. They also provide channel and shoreline stabilization. Fascines, otherwise known as fiber rolls, bio-logs or gabions are coir compressed in tubular fiber nets. They are best for the protection and rehabilitation of shorelines, riverbanks and mangrove areas. Goetextiles and fascines act as planting medium for all functional and ornamental vegetationn in most eroded areas. Thus, both coir products are best for erosion control. They are bio-degradable and flexible since they follow the earth's and soil's movement.
