Orpiment (Auripigmentum, King's Yellow, Arsenic Sulfide)
Master pigment - Orpiment is lemon yellow color made of crystaline type mineral from deposits in Peru. PICTURE This source produce very pure, foil type of mineral. Is difficult to grind not because of hardness of mineral but because of its structure. Very thin layers holds together tight and producing in grinding big lumps first. Layers can be actually pealed and separated from mineral by hand making squeaky noise. Separated single layer is very translucent with bright yellow hue. Appears as sunlight on surface with resemblance to gold.
Pigment is prepared by hand selection of crystals and manual separation impurities from them. Then are pieces reduced in size and wet grinded in metals free enviroment to prevent discoloration and contamination. High sulfur odor accompanies whole process. After grinding is powder washed and separated by levigation.
Fine powder is absolutely pure bright canary yellow with gold sparks. Coarse pigment is darker with resemblace to powdered gold. Listed pictures of dry pigment and wet sample cannot express this color in its beauty. 
Element of sun, when added too much, burns. Use in glazes over well dried or sealed layers (When bottom layer color is incompatible with Orpiment. Always test mixes with other colors. 
Mix with whites: bone white (calcinated bones or egg shells), oyester shells white from Japan. 
Use plastic spatula when mixing paint, avoid contact with metal causes discoloration. 
Avoid contact with metal tools because they cause discoloration of color. 
Toxic, handle very carefully. Avoid any contact with skin. Pigment have very strong staining properties.
