The significance for establishing silo safety protection system
With the nation attaching importance to environmental protection and in the performance of policy in each industry, many large electric power plants are considering that scattered pile of coal not only occupies large area, contaminates environment but also reduces the quality of coal due to long term weathering. So, they use silo storage manner. Practice has proved that silo storage manner is advisable, but it has also unavoidably some problems, such as, owing to the characteristic of coal itself, namely, the trend of spontaneous combustion due to oxidation heat liberation. Moreover, in a limited hermetic space where heat can hardly be dispersed and combustible gas can be easily produced, “air duct effect” may cause fire and explosion, result in fatal accidents and huge losses.
When the accident occurs, temporarily injecting inert gases like carbon dioxide or nitrogen in the silo is an advisable protective measure for small silo of less than ***0 cubic meters. But such a measure can’t be achieved for big coal silo of tens of thousands of cubic meters. So, U.S. NFPA*8/*9 standards for preventive explosion definitely points out that extinguishing a fire of big coal silo after it caught fire is very difficult, and control and fire prevention shall be considered rather than fire extinguishing.

2. Working principle of silo safety protection systemSilo safety protection system mainly includes four parts: safety detection system, inertia protection system, automatic explosion venting device and control system.
Working principle: first three parts cooperate with each other and upgrade step by step. As the first stage, safety detection system carries through a detection of full range, omnidirectional and deep administrative level, timely sends out an early warning command. According to the pre-warning command, the second stage lock, the third stage injecting and the change process of the fourth stage of inertia protection system are automatically started; after primary protection, if emergent abnormal working condition appears, safety explosion venting device can automatically start and carry out the fifth stage protection to silo. The fourth part, namely the control system is also an important component of whole system. Its work process is: It analyses, treats and collects the signal after PLC receives a detection signal. If the value of the signal is higher than the alarm value, corresponding valve is opened automatically according to alarm signal, air is injected to relevant part inside the silo, so the risk source is removed. Multi stages and multipoint and timely protective measures insure silos and their peripheral equipment operate safely.
