ÂAPPLICATIONS
ÂBiochemistry Synthetic auxin (acting like indolylacetic acid). Â Mode of action Selective, systemic, hormone-type herbicide, absorbed by the leaves and roots, with translocation. Concentrates in the meristematic regions, where it inhibits growth. Â Uses Post-emergence control of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds (including thistles and docks) in cereals (alone or undersown), herbage seed crops, flax, rice, vines, peas, potatoes, asparagus, grassland, turf, under fruit trees, and on roadside verges and embankments, etc., at 0.***2.*5 kg/ha. Control of broad-leaved and woody weeds in forestry. Control of aquatic broad-leaved weeds. Often used in combination with other herbicides. Phytotoxicity Phytotoxic to vines, vegetables, cotton, and ornamentals. Â Formulation types EC; SL; SP. Â

ÂANALYSIS
ÂProduct analysis (acid or salts) by i.r. spectrometry (AOAC Methods, *7th Ed., **1.*7, CIPAC Handbook, ***5, 1C, ***7), by hplc (ibid., ***5, 1C, ***9; AOAC Methods, *7th Ed., **0.*7) by liquid/liquid chromatography (CIPAC Handbook, ***5, C, ***8; ***0, 1A, **7), by glc of a derivative (CIPAC Handbook, ***5, 1C, ***3, ***7; ***4, F, ******9) or by titration (ibid., ***5, 1C, ***7); esters by similar methods (ibid., ***5, 1C, ***5); FAO Specification 2/TC/S/F (***2). Mixtures with 2,3,*-TBA by titration or chromatography of a derivative (CIPAC Handbook, ***5, C, ***8). Free phenol impurity determined by glc (CIPAC Handbook, ***4, F, **7), hplc (ibid., ***4, F, **2) or electrochemically (ibid., ***4, F, **8). Residues determined by glc of a derivative (J. Lest, Anal. Methods Pestic., Plant Growth Regul. Food Addit., ***7, 5, **9; Anal. Methods Pestic. Plant Growth Regul., ***2, 6, **3) or by hplc (M. Meier et al., Fresenius' Z. Anal. Chem.,***9, **4(3), **5). Â
ÂÂ
ÂMAMMALIAN TOXICOLOGY
ÂIARC ref. *0, *1; Suppl. 7 Â class chlorophenoxy herbicides classified as 2B, based on epidemiology of production. More recent evidence (M. Kogevinas et al., Am. J. Epidemiol., **5(*2), ***1 (***7)) relates this to dioxin contamination of early production. Not relevant to current processes. Â
ÂÂ
ÂMCPA
ÂOral Acute oral LD*0 for rats *******0 mg/kg. Â Skin and eye Acute percutaneous LD*0 for rats >***0 mg/kg. Not irritating to skin; irritating to eyes. Not a skin sensitiser. Â Inhalation LC*0 (4 h) for rats >6.*6 mg/l. Â NOEL (*4 mo) for rats *0 ppm (c. 1.*3 mg/kg daily), for mice **0 ppm (c. *8 mg/kg daily). Â Water GV 2 mg/l (TDI 0.5 mg/kg b.w.). Â Toxicity class WHO (a.i.) III; EPA (formulation) III Â EC classification Xn; R*2| Xi; R*8, R*1: (for salts and esters, Xn; R*0/*1/*2) Â
ÂÂ
ÂMCPA**-ethylhexyl
ÂSkin and eye A skin irritant. Not a skin sensitiser (guinea pigs). Â Inhalation LC*0 for rats >4.5 mg/l. Â
ÂÂ
ÂECOTOXICOLOGY
ÂMCPA
ÂBirds Acute oral LD*0 for bobwhite quail **7 mg/kg. Sub-acute dietary LC*0 (5 d) for bobwhite quail and mallard ducks >***0 ppm. Â Fish LC*0 (*6 h) for rainbow trout *****0, bluegill sunfish >**0, carp **7, silverside **0 mg/l. Â Daphnia LC*0 (*8 h) >**0 mg/l. Â Algae EC*0 for Selenastrum capricornutum >**2 mg/l. Â Other aquatic spp. LC*0 for pink shrimp (Panaeus duorarum) **1 mg/l. Â Bees LD*0 0.**4 mg/bee. Â Worms LD*0 (*4 d) for Eisenia foetida **5 mg/kg soil. Â
ÂÂ
ÂENVIRONMENTAL FATE
Â
Animals In rats, following oral administration, MCPA is rapidly
absorbed and excreted almost exclusively in the urine, with only a
small proportion in the faeces. Only moderate metabolism occurs,
and there is only a small amount of conjugate formation.
Plants In winter wheat, MCPA is hydroxylated at the methyl
group with formation of *-hydroxymethyl**-chlorophenoxyacetic acid.
This may be further degraded to the benzoic acid, prior to ring
opening. Â Soil/Environment In soil, degraded to
*-chloro**-methylphenol, followed by ring hydroxylation and ring
opening. DT*0 **0 mg/bee. Â
