Gum Arabic is the hardened sap acquired from the various species of the acacia tree. As the name suggest, Gum Arabic is more commonly found in the Arabic and West Asian areas of the world. It is most commonly found in Sudan and can also be found from Senegal to Somalia.
The two sugar compounds known as arabinose and ribose were extracted from, and named after Gum Arabic.
Gum Arabic is known in the chemical world as a very effective stabilizer that hinders a chemical reaction between two or more ingredients. It is edible and has an E number of E **4.
There are numerous applications for Gum Arabic which range from viscosity control in different industries to making a middle-eastern gelato like dessert at home.
 

Industrial Applications

Food based

Gum Arabic is used as an emulsifier to thicken food items such as:

• Icings
• Chewing Gum
• Confectionery Treats

Printing

Gum Arabic is very commonly used in lithographic processes. It is used to etch images both on traditional stones and aluminum plates.

Fireworks

Gum Arabic is used as a water-soluble binder for the fireworks industry.

Ceramics

When manufacturing ceramics, Gum Arabic acts as a binder to help the glaze settle with the clay before it is fired which reduces the risk of damaging the piece during handling and manufacturing.

Painting and Art

Gum Arabic is also used as a binder in water color paints due to its high solubility in water. Gum Arabic acts as a vehicle to facilitate the water color onto the surface such as paper.
Gum Arabic also facilitates the working time when painting as it slows down the evaporation of water. After the paint is applied, Gum Arabic increases the luminosity after the evaporation due to its binding properties.
